This medal is from the estate collection of WWII Chaplain James Hugh O'Neill. It was acquired by my mother 50 years ago along with several others that we will auction off this year. The Forstner Jewelry Company was founded in 1920 in Irvington, New Jersey. VERY few Saint Christopher medals from this company have survived in this condition and it is considered a rare Catholic medal.
Rt. Rev. Msgr. James Hugh O'Neill (January 14, 1892 – April 17, 1972) was an American Catholic priest who served as a chaplain in the United States Army from 1926 to 1952, rising to the rank of brigadier general. While serving as chaplain of the Third United States Army during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, he composed the famous "Weather Prayer" at the request of the Third Army's commander, General George S. Patton.
The medal is 1.5 inches long and weighs 9 grams sterling. These would have been given out to soldiers as gifts. Saint Christopher is a Catholic devotional medal that many believed would provide Heavenly protection through their travels.
